The Space Between Home and Garden
This is about the spaces we gather, not necessarily around the formal dining table, but the informal and wholly authentic connections that happen gathered with family and friends around your kitchen island. or rocking with your best friend on the front porch chairs or swing, or celebrating summer holidays in the yard with paper cups and plates and a mess of children and dogs running around your feet. Its the spaces with no outlets to plug in a TV, computer or phone. Its the spaces where the breeze blows both ways and the curtains billow. It is the space with screen doors that squeak and slam as you pop back in the house with your arms full of garden abundance or pop back out to place a dish in front of your family and friends at the patio or garden table. This is about the space between home and garden and using it to mold them, inseparably, into one continuous experience, one joyous place, and one delicious life. Its molding them into the space where you cultivate and celebrate a garden inspired life.
It’s a Gardening Journey
My dream of becoming a gardener began thirteen years ago, after being diagnosed with Lupus. Over the months following my diagnosis, my health and my emotions were a very bumpy ride, but I found peace, joy and wellbeing outside, amongst nature, and in the fragrant air of my very tiny but loved balcony garden. Over time and with lots of trial and error, my garden has slowly evolved and grown, and it is now the heart of everything I do. It is my connection to nature, my home, my food, my drink, my family and my friends. Connecting to the people I love through gardening, entertaining, food and drink have become my creative outlet and my greatest source of fulfillment, which heals not only my body and health, but my heart, mind, and soul. My goal is to help bring the garden into your life, so you can find your own journey towards these beautiful things.
Embrace the Perfectly Imperfect
Everything I share in my blog was learned through trial and error and a lot of experimenting. I spend a lot of time elbow deep in the dirt, both literally and metaphorically. My garden has been described as “wild, but also not wild”. Some parts are manicured and some are “perfectly imperfect”, as I like to call them. I also don’t live on a huge property with tons of land, and much of the food I grow, I grow in containers. That’s the beauty of the space between home and garden. There are no formalities, no expectations, no perfections…only discoveries, growth, beauty, learning and love.
Dairy Free and Gluten Free
Since part of this journey is also about health and wellness, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that almost every recipe you will find at the Sow & Sip Society is dairy free and gluten free. We also focus on vegetarian and pescatarian cooking. We believe wholeheartedly that our food is our medicine and that means our plants, flowers and vegetables. Treat these things as your medium and your food as your art, and it will elevate your connection to what and how you eat and drink. I am not saying we all have to eat healthy all the time, but the garden can be a source of inspiration for food and drink full of whole, fresh, and colorful ingredients that elevate the dining and entertaining experience…its an opportunity to slow down, savor, and focus on this one perfect, beautiful moment.
